Early stage policy jobs at 'AI safety organisations' seem to be very competitive at the moment. For people who need a certain level of financial stability, it is very ok to take a day job that isn't working on AI safety-relevant policy, and build your knowledge, network and credibility part-time, or as one part of a wider job.
